Frequently Asked Questions - BALANCE K 216 AFC AKG

How to charge the AKG BALANCE K 216 AFC headphone?
Place the headphone on the transmitter to charge the built-in battery. You can also insert the spare battery into a side compartment. Charging takes about 4 hours and the red lights stay on when charging is complete. The headphone can remain on the transmitter without risk of overcharging.
What to do if I hear no sound in the headphone?
Check that the audio source is on and the headphone volume is turned up (wheel 6). Press the AUTOTUNING button (5) to synchronize the headphone with the transmitter. Make sure the battery is charged. If the problem persists, increase the output level of the audio source.
How to change the frequency to avoid interference?
If you hear whistling or cracking, use the three-position frequency selector (8) on the back of the transmitter to switch to another frequency (1, 2, or 3). Then press the AUTOTUNING button (5) on the headphone so that it locks onto the new frequency.
What is the maximum range of the wireless headphone?
Under ideal conditions (free field), the range can reach 100 meters. Walls and ceilings can reduce this range. The signal passes through obstacles but quality may decrease.
How to clean the ear cushions of the headphone?
Remove the ear cushions and wash them with soapy water. Rinse and dry them completely before putting them back. Clogged ear cushions can alter sound quality.
Can I use the headphone while it is charging?
No, the headphone must be placed on the transmitter for charging. It can be used by removing it from the transmitter, but charging then stops. You can charge the spare battery separately during use.
How to adjust the audio balance between ears?
Use the balance adjustment button (7) located on the back of the headphone. Turn it in the opposite direction of the strongest channel until you get equal volume on both sides. It is recommended to remove the headphone to make this adjustment.
What to do if the sound becomes distorted or weak?
This may indicate that the batteries are low. Recharge the headphone or replace the battery. Also check that the transmitter is properly connected to the audio source and that the frequency selector is not disturbed.
How to turn off the headphone automatically?
Simply remove the headphone. It turns off automatically. The transmitter turns off about 5 minutes after the audio source stops. The charging function remains active even when the transmitter is off.
Can I use standard rechargeable batteries?
No, the headphone requires a special NiMH battery of 2.4 V supplied with the device. You can order spare batteries from your AKG dealer. Do not use other types of batteries.

4 Placing the Transmitter

Refer to fig. 1.

The T 216 AFC transmitter is a radio frequency device conforming to the related strict European standards. Due to physical effects that are not related to the quality of the product, devices emitting very high interference radiation may, however, affect the signal received by the headphones.

To ensure the best possible reception, do not place your T 216 AFC transmitter near radio equipment, mobile phones, or directly above the picture tube of a TV set or computer monitor.

5 Connecting the Transmitter

AKG BALANCE K 216 AFC - Connecting the Transmitter - 1

Check that the AC mains voltage stated on the AC adapter is identical with the AC mains

voltage in your area. Operating the AC adapter off a different AC mains voltage may damage the unit.

Refer to fig. 2 A: audio source with headphone output (" 串 " or "PHONES");

fig. 2 B: audio source with "LINE OUT" or "REC OUT" jacks;

fig. 2 C: audio source with SCART connector (A ... SCART adapter).

  1. Before connecting the transmitter to your audio source (TV set, radio, hi-fi system, etc.), switch power to the audio source off.

  2. Connect the transmitter to your audio source using the supplied AK 2 connecting cable (white = left-hand channel, red = right-hand channel).

  3. Plug the cable on the supplied AC adapter into the DC 12 V jack on the transmitter rear panel.
  4. Plug the AC adapter into a convenient power outlet.

6 Charging Battery Packs

Before you can use the headphones, you will need to charge the battery pack inside the headphones. We recommend charging the supplied replacement battery pack at the same time.

Refer to fig. 3.

  1. Place the headphones (1) on the transmitter (2).
  2. Insert the supplied replacement battery pack (3) into one of the charging slots in the transmitter side panels.

The charging process will start automatically. The appropriate indicator LED(s) (4a or 4b for the replacement battery packs, 4c for the battery pack inside the headphones) will be lit red. The two battery packs will be fully charged in approx. four hours. The indicator LEDs (4) will remain lit.

You can leave the headphones on the transmitter and the battery packs inside the charging slots without risking to overcharge the batteries.

Note: The charging slots on the transmitter allow you to charge two battery packs along with the battery pack inside the headphones (see fig. 3/1).

7 Powering Up

Before switching power to your system on, please note:

  • Using headphones at high volume levels, particularly for extended periods of time, may damage your hearing.
  • Operating switches on your hi-fi system or connecting the transmitter to your audio source may cause clicks, which at high volume settings may affect your hearing. Therefore, be sure to set the volume control on the headphones to minimum (see fig. 5) before switching between different sources (tuner, turntable, CD player, etc.) or connecting the transmitter.
  • Interference caused by other users of the same frequency band is beyond AKG's control.

  • Remove the headphones from the transmitter.

  • Switch power to your audio source (and/or hi-fi system) on.
  • The transmitter will switch on automatically. The green transmitter status LED will be lit.

If a battery pack is being charged inside the transmitter, the appropriate charging LED will remain lit red.

Note: If no signal arrives at the transmitter input for five minutes, the transmitter will switch off automatically and the green transmitter status LED will go out.

  1. Put the headphones on referring to fig. 4.

The headphones will switch on automatically.

  1. Push the AUTOTUNING button (5). The headphones will automatically tune to the transmitter's radio frequency.
  2. Refer to fig. 5. Use the volume control (6) to set the desired volume level.
  3. Refer to fig. 6. Should the sound be louder in one speaker than it is in the other, turn the balance control (7) to the left or right to the point that the sound is equally loud in both speakers.

The balance control (7) is located on the headphone rear panel. We therefore recommend taking the headphones off to set the left/right balance.

Note: Refer to fig. 7. Under ideal conditions, the transmitter signal will penetrate walls and ceilings within a range of up to 330 feet (100 m). Therefore, you may even use the headphones outside the room where you set up the transmitter.

8 Powering Down

  1. Take the headphones off.
The headphones will switch off automatically.
  2. Switch power to your audio source off.
The transmitter will switch off automatically approx. five minutes after you switched off the audio source.

Note: The charging function on the transmitter will remain in standby mode so

you can charge battery packs at any time.

9 What to Do if...

...the headphones remain silent:
- Switch power to your audio source on and turn the volume control (6) on the headphones up. If this does not help, insert a fully charged battery pack into the headphones.
- If the output level control on your audio source is at zero, turn the output level control up.
- Press the AUTOTUNING button (5) on the headphones.
...you hear unwanted noise (whistling, hiss, crackling) in the headphones:
Refer to fig. 8. Set the three-position frequency selector (8) on the transmitter rear panel to a different frequency (1, 2, or 3) and press the AUTOTUNING button (5) on the headphones.
- ...the sound becomes quieter or distorted:
- Refer to fig. 9: Replace the battery pack in the headphones with the fully charged replacement battery pack. Insert the dead battery pack into one of the charging slots. The battery pack will be charged automatically.

10 Cleaning Ear Pads

Clogged ear pads may affect the sound quality.

  1. Remove the ear pads.
  2. Wash the ear pads in sudsy water.
  3. Allow the ear pads to dry completely and replace them on the speaker capsules.
